28. What is that?

After spending some cycles enjoying the view, both G01-S01-PR-Patrec and G01-S02-DA-Daan decided to cross the canyon, going back to the spherical shuttle. Something was odd, though. The path they took just a mere couple of hundreds cycles, was blocked by an ancient tree.

“What…” G01-S02-DA-Daan didn’t know how to finish the question.

“… is that?” said G01-S01-PR-Patrec.

“Are we sure we didn’t miss our path?”

“I just double-checked our position. I’m sure in an 83.4% that we are at the same place we crossed the canyon at.”

“I see. How possibly have this tree appeared here?”

The tree looked magnificent, aged, and complex. Its knotty purple trunk was a fusion of smaller stems intertwined intricately to form a huge, big body of more than six meters. A majestic fluffy crown at its top, huge and beautiful, full of small yellow leaves caressed softly by the wind.

“Is it me, or the tree trunk is pulsing?” asked G01-S02-DA-Daan looking the tree from afar.

“What is it made of?” answered G01-S01-PR-Patrec and stepped forward trying to get a better picture.

“We should inform Omni,” said G01-S02-DA-Daan and opened an audio channel.

“Yes?”

“You need to see this. Do you want me to open a video channel or do you prefer to come here in person?” Asked G01-S02-DA-Daan, but suddenly changed her mind. “Would you mind if I feed you a video channel?”

“Go ahead,” answered Omni. “Let’s see what you got.”

The video feed didn’t do it justice. It almost didn’t show the small lights that came from all the stems, as alien fireflies. G01-S02-DA-Daan zoomed in, to let examine some features of the twisted thick trunk, ones that showed breathing throbbing scales that waved rhythmically.

Omni stayed silent. Observing. Thinking. Worrying. “Is it alive? Is it dangerous? What is it?” Was the only things she could ask.

27. Who Is Dorothea?

It was about some days after they had decided to take the chopines and Omni headed for CMP-000. After dismantling the framework of the city that never was, they could travel the fairly short distance to their—hopefully—new home.

Omni had sent some fast probes to find the best spot on CMP-000 to start, again, the settlement. Honestly, she didn’t expect to get any new information. In the worst case, she would have to deal with big amount of redundant data.

Afterwards, she designed a schematic action plan which she had distributed to the rest of the members. In it, she had added some vital information gathered until the moment, and a summary of her worries. Now she wanted to recycle the materials from Ciutat-0 and get some new basic elements they would soon need. Additionally, she wanted to get some stronger equipment to wear on the field. The catalogue of equipment could get updated, maybe when she would print an engineer she could ask for a better design. For now, she chose a lightweight strength exoskeleton for all the crew setting enough of them in the queue to get produced.

On the rest of the travel, before arriving, Omni took some time for herself. She wanted to take care of some trees in the forest, and she decided to do it in the old fashion—by hand. It was too long ago since the last time she did it that way. It was an intense feeling for her, but soon she discovered herself floating deep in her own thoughts. This time, she allowed herself to explore picture-thoughts and idea-thoughts without a predefined subject and, by no means, with any purpose.

A silent alarm dragged Omni from the remote place she had gone. They were near CMP-000, so she shot herself hooked to the track that lead her to the control room. In the way, she sent a call to the rest of the members of the ship, asking them to meet her.

“On my free time, I have been gone through the data we already have—and while we wait for the new to come—and I have ordered it in different chunks, easier to handle,” said G01-S02-DA-Daan. Visibly proud of herself.

“Do you want to be the first to process the info that will arrive from the probes? They will be here in about 9342 milliseconds,” Omni replied.

“About?” Joked G01-S02-DA-Daan. “You’ll make me very happy, indeed.”

“I’m thinking in stay in orbit and descend to have a look on the field. I’ll reroute the incoming data to your space.”

“I guess I come with you,” said G01-S03-DC-Dacol.

“If you like, also G01-S01-PR-Patrec,” said Omni looking at it, and saw it nod back to her. “Perfect, then. Get ready. G01-S02-DA-Daan make sure this is a safe place to stay, and if you have a suggestion on a different spot to start the new city, let me know. I want to see the central area of that continent,” she sent a reference of the coordinates she was talking about, “but I still don’t know if it would be a good place.”

The meeting was over. Omni was quietly eager to descend to the surface, as impatient as worried about the environmental conditions.

The small party took a small shuttle, a spherical ship able to host up to six persons, so they had space to bring a set of bots and a microsettlement. They were wearing some special air filters, and the exoskeletons which make them look fiercer. “True aliens,” thought Omni, amused.

She shot the vessel into the void, from the starship heading to the planet. There they were, small, a grain of sand in a see of stars. Falling. Omni paused to enjoy that moment, before they entered the atmosphere, softly, and landing in the centre of a big island, near of what it looked like a narrow canyon that split the land in two, very different areas. The side they were, almost barren, it looked painted by a lazy artist. All they could see was brown and grey, even some of the vegetation, consistent in small bulbs hanging from low limbs and branches, seemed monochrome. At the other side of the gully though, the painter had had more fun. Tall thin turquoise trees, shined under the sun. When they were swaying, their colours changed to different shades. Its purple fuzz leafs, were surrounded of hair-thin stalks from where they hung tiny berries.

“Oh, air is indeed thin here,” Omni said and adjusted the air filter from her nose. “Let’s set the microsettlement here, and let’s start doing some readings. I’ll send a few bots.”

She switched two bots and sent them across the canyon. They flew to the other side and got lost almost immediately in the vegetation. Next, she took two more and send them in the opposite direction. Omni checked the signal of for units and then continued setting the equipment.

They spent about 98304 cycles taking samples of the soil and the vegetation; some berries, leafs, and tree flakes. Additionally, they measured wind, light, and temperature cycles; and they also collected data on electromagnetic waves and quantum fluctuations patterns. G01-S03-DC-Dacol, in her excitement—she loved that task—collected anything imaginable that Omni was pretty sure it was only for her own enjoyment. Meanwhile, G01-S01-PR-Patrec had been preprocessing huge blocks of information and sent them to G01-S02-DA-Daan on the ship, for her to analyse.

At this point, they decided, after spending almost 10000 cycles on that task that they could use some free time. Omni wanted to dream-imagine for a while on her own. She got into the vessel and made a space, wrapped onto herself and disconnected all sensors but the emergency channel.

G01-S01-PR-Patrec and G01-S02-DA-Daan spent some cycles inventing a very elaborated game, they improved it and tested a couple of matches until they got bored of it. Afterwards, they went through a couple of databases they were working on for some time. They checked them now and then adding, deleting and tweaking entrances. But that took less time than they thought, so at the end, they decided to go for a walk.

“I would like to see the llebeigean limit of the forest, there—” G01-S02-DA-Daan showed G01-S01-PR-Patrec a location. “Do you want to go with me?” It nodded.

“Let me take something,” it said and reached an arm scanner.

They walk round the end of the canyon, where they could cross to the other side comfortably. G01-S02-DA-Daan already loved that area. The colours were intense, and the light reflected in a special way on the speck of material floating over that area. They sat there in silence.

Chapter 26. Data

Omni had mixed feelings, even if deep down she knew it was a good decision, she couldn’t help thinking she failed in her mission. She shook her head and decided to revisit the information about the planets in the system previously discarded.

Once she loaded the information, she dismissed CMP-001 one. Maybe it would be a good idea to rescan planet CMP-000, to send a probe and gather new images and data. So she did.

While she was waiting, she read the protocols she had to follow in order to update the project to the new target. It took her some time to find some contradictions. She didn’t expect what she was reading at all, she was puzzled. She thought the directives were checked meticulously to avoid this kind of situations, but it seemed that was not the case.

Omni needed those protocols, without them, she was lost. The mere idea of not knowing what to expect next was terrifying. And she didn’t like that. “Come down,” she muttered. She could take some advice from G01-S05-DT-Deta and maybe G01-S02-DA-Daan. She felt something new, she felt she could rely on both, on all of them, and be a little less alone. That might be the warmth Ame76 sometimes referred to. “Interesting!” She thought and added a post to her private diary.

That was a perfect time to charge and clear her head.

Omni powered fully on when she received a notification of the arrival of a torrent of data from CMP-000 to start looking into the overview information about the planet. It had a standard size, no too big, not too small, but a thin atmosphere—she had considered that a problem—They might need to build an extra dome for the forest not to die. On the other hand, it looked like there was no intelligent life—even though she couldn’t be completely sure, specially now—An exhaustive scan on the planet itself would be necessary. But seamed that there was no presence of known bacteria, nor viruses. A little more than 50% of the planet was water, with scattered islands of different shapes and sizes.

Even if the planet was not completely inhospitable, Omni was worried about the inability of the already printed subjects—and the forest—to adapt to the new environmental conditions. After the latest events, she needed some quiet time now.

Resum (en)

After twenty-four episodes, the duration of the first season, it could be a little difficult to remember the whole story. Also, in the hopes for some new people to join in now to this journey, it might be nice to make a hyperrecap of what has happened so far. Come with me.

What has happened (English timeline)?

The story begins with Omni, the one in charge of the most important mission for humanity, halfway to GN-z11 with one goal: the colonization of the other side of the universe.

After an unexpected encounter with a mechanical being and arriving to their destination, they set out to colonize one of the planets in the system. Alas, however, they find a structure there, where they fall into a trap. All the crew is in danger, but they manage to come back to the spaceship. There, they discuss the possibility to colonize another planet.

Interspersed, starting on 28 10 1764 ne, we will learn about the world where Älexα and Öscβ live. Two scientists studying an energy vein, in a strange society where magic mixes with science.

Here begins the second season of

Venonta Vivo

The participatory weekly story.

Note

Allow me to cheat a little (only for those who have followed the story from the beginning) and restart the second season. Just because I think it can be much more interesting this way (and a little more dangerous? Yes? No?).

The idea is to publish a chapter every week following the story according to the results of the poll below. Voting will be possible until next Monday at 11:55 p.m. So, I’ll have two days to write the next chapter.

Venonta Vivo Season one is available for purchase, or a summary can be read here.

Chapter 25. Away

The sentence was interrupted by the blast. The communal hook exploded pushing everyone away violently.

“What happened!” said Omny? “Gent, how are you?”

One after another, wireless confirmations of different status were arriving from everyone in the room. No one was lost.

“It might have been the quasar pulsator; it was still connected to the system,” said G01-S02-DA-Daan. “I found a glitch in your analyses that got replicated exponentially. Apparently, it echoed through the pulsator.”

Omny sent a signal and a group of adaptable robots came in through the door. They divided into smaller groups and started checking on the health of the members and fixing the explosion area.

After that, Omny rebooted just before connecting to the main computer and initiated a full system check, which would take quite a while.

“If everyone is OK, let’s talk about what we should do now,” Omni said.

“What do you suggest? You are in charge of the mission after all,” said G01-S05-DT-Deta.

“I want to know your opinions, though.”

“Let’s see, what are our current options? We are in an inhabited planet (82 % chance), hostile (64 % chance), project completion (8 %), and a current probability of success of 49 %,” said G01-S02-DA-Daan.

“Are there some other factors that we should take in consideration?” Asked G01-S00-CS-Censer.

That question sparkled a brief high-speed discussion. Once finished, it seemed the decision was taken—

“Let’s find a nicer home then, ĉu ni?” Said G01-S03-DC-Dacol.
